FAQ
Who joins Mothers and More?

Mothers & More provides services that meet the needs of mothers who are - by choice or circumstance - altering their participation in the paid workplace over the course of their active parenting years. Our moms come from all walks of life and include:

  • Moms who have left full-time employment to be at home with their children
  • Moms working part-time outside the home,
  • Moms starting up their own businesses,
  • Moms packing a full week's paid work into four days,
  • Moms transitioning back to full-time paid employment,
  • Moms working from home,
  • Moms pursuing further education

Moms join us because all of these various shifts in the role of paid work in their lives have an impact on them personally, and they are looking to connect with other mothers in similar situations.

Can I attend meetings without becoming a member?
You are welcome to attend up to two mom's-only events such as chapter meetings, Mom's Night Out, or Connections. After that, we hope you'll decide to join us as a member.

Can I take my child to meetings?
Mothers & More encourages our members to view chapter meetings as opportunities to focus on themselves as individuals, apart from the demands of family. For some mothers, this is a rare opportunity to spend time socializing away from home without children. We realize, however, that for some mothers and infants a separation of several hours is difficult. Our current policy is to let infants under 6 months to attend. Children are always welcome at kids' activities, of course, and our chapter often holds mother-and-child playdates.

Where are your meetings held?
We meet all over the West San Fernando Valley. Our chapter meetings are currently held at The Child Development Institute at the corner of Owensmouth and Vanowen. For moms-only meetings, we get together at restaurants, activity venues or members' homes. Our family parties happen several times a year and are held at either a members' home or in a local park.

Is there a fee to join?
Since we are part of a national nonprofit organization, there are costs involved with keeping the organization running. The annual dues are $45 and include the use of the national Mothers & More resources like the website, email loops, newsletter, and more. This amount is tax deductible. Scholarships are available through our National organization for those people who are unable to pay the fee.

Do I have to attend all the meetings to remain a member?
Members aren't required to attend all events or even a certain number of events per month or year. You are free to use our group as it fits your needs. We have some members who benefit from being a part of the national organization but don't attend many events on the local level. We also have members who only attend playgroups and can't make it to meetings. Some of our moms who work outside the home are only able to attend evening meetings. We are happy to have you as a member no matter how you choose to participate.

Who plans all of your meetings and events?
We have a chapter board made up of members who have volunteered to hold various leadership positions within the chapter. This group plans most of the chapter meetings, Connections meetings and formal social events. Playdates and Moms Night Out events are planned by anyone who is interested in hosting them. At any given time a member can email our calendar gal and have something added to the calendar.

What is sequencing?
Mothers & More represents women who - by choice or by circumstance - alter their participation in the paid workplace ove rthe course of their active parenting years. We recognize the needs of the growing number of mothers who move in and out of paid employment and/or opt for a viety of flexible work arrangements in order to successfully balance their work and family responsibilities. This fluid work patter, which occurs over a number of years and at various stages of motherhood, is known as "sequencing." The term sequencing was coined by Arlene Rossen Cardozo in her 1986 book, Sequencing.

What is the Care Committee?
This program is for any member who needs some extra help or special care after such events as giving birth, dealing with an illness, or when other family emergencies arise. Contact our Care Committee coordinator and she will arrange to have prepared meals delivered to your home, someone to do your laundry or babysit your children while you go to an urgent appointment, or someone to just lend a helping hand. We can all benefit from this service in our lives at one time or another.

What is a Seasoned Mom?
The job of our Seasoned Moms Coordinator is to meet the needs of members who are transitioning into the next phase of Motherhood, caring for school-aged children. We hope to provide a setting where Moms in this subgroup can continue to receive support and friendship as they enter this "phase of Motherhood." Of course, we encourage and heartily welcome ALL members to any of our events.
